The Government is launching Emergency Alert, a new warning and informing capability to support saving lives during major incidents.

On Sunday April 23 there will be a national test which will be received on compatible mobile phones. The exact timing is to be confirmed.

The service will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at risk in an emergency. It will be used to send a direct message only where there is a risk to life, either locally or nationally. This could include public health emergencies, severe floods, fires and industrial incidents.

An Emergency Alert looks and sounds very different to other types of messages such as text messages. You’ll know if you get an Emergency Alert because you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound and your phone will have a distinct vibration. A message will appear on your screen until you acknowledge it.
