Action Taken Under Delegated Authority: Significant Operational Decision: Town Centre Signage and Wayfinding

On 27 November 2017, Cabinet approved the signage and wayfinding audit for the town centre and gave delegated authority to the Head of Economic & Environmental Services, in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development to agree the final design and placement locations of the signs, subject to some public consultation over the images to be used on the signage and further consideration over the need for a ‘meeting point’ being included in the proposed signage at a prominent location.

Consultation on the images to be used on some of the signs is underway and can be accessed until Friday 9 February 2018 using the following link http://www.regeneratingcrawley.org.uk/content/have-your-say-crawley%E2%80%99s-new-place-branding

With regard to consideration of a 'meeting point' being included, we have sought advice from our consultant expert at Wood & Wood and his response was as follows:

“My view is that it is better to show specific named landmarks such as the Bandstand, The George or Library. If you were to have a named meeting point where would you put it? If, for example, it was in the High Street, I would argue this would then disadvantage businesses on the other side of the town centre”.

If the thinking behind the request was to signpost people to a specific place to meet up if, for example, they are travelling to the town centre from different locations, this is not considered appropriate or necessary. Most people have a mobile phone and will naturally make their own meeting arrangements. For these reasons, it has been agreed that the signage will not include any reference to a meeting point.
